SECD Launches Emergency Response Project for Displaced Persons from Rural Aleppo and Idlib

The southern countryside of Aleppo and the eastern countryside of Idlib and Hama witnessed a massive wave of displacement at the beginning of this year due to the military operations in the region. Human rights and humanitarian organizations estimated the number of displaced persons at approximately half a million. They spread across camps and shelters in the western countryside of Aleppo and areas near the Turkish border, lacking the most basic necessities of life such as water, sanitation, and public services. In response to this urgent humanitarian situation, the Syrian Engineers for Construction and Development (SECD), in cooperation with the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector in Turkey (OCHA), launched a project aimed at providing drinking water to several displaced communities in the region. According to Dr. Abdullah Saghir, Executive Director of SECD, the project aims to provide drinking water and sanitation services to 172,186 individuals temporarily residing in the villages and towns of Darat Izza and Atarib in the western countryside of Aleppo. Dr. Abdullah Saghir added that the project includes support for the solid waste sector, construction of toilets and bathing facilities, and the provision of water tanks and hygiene kits to camps. On his part, Project Manager Eng. Kamel confirmed that the organization’s teams supplied local councils in the villages and towns of Darat Izza and Atarib with diesel fuel to operate water stations and garbage transport tractors, in addition to equipping water stations with tools and materials for water sterilization. According to Eng. Kamel, efforts are ongoing to construct and equip toilets, sanitation facilities, and garbage containers within the informal camps spread throughout the area.
